Facebook Releases New Face Recognition Feature to Control Impersonation

The issue of impersonation has eaten deep into Facebook, as not only popular people suffers from this, even the upcoming ones are been targeted now. Well, the social media giant has added a new face recognition feature which will help users find out when someone else uses their photos, thus, reducing scams from impersonators and other photo thieves.

This feature comes with an option which if enabled, will send you a notification anytime you're spotted in a photo that you're not tagged with. You’ll also be notified if someone is trying to impersonate you on Facebook by using your photo as their profile image.

According to Facebook:
"You’re in control of your image on Facebook and can make choices such as whether to tag yourself, leave yourself untagged, or reach out to the person who posted the photo if you have concerns about it.

So, Facebook is giving you three options once it sees an untagged photo of you uploaded by someone else: you can either tag yourself in the photo, let it slide by leaving yourself untagged, or try to contact the person who posted the image.

How it Works:
We have this feature courtesy of face recognition technology. According to Facebook:
"Our technology analyzes the pixels in photos you’re already tagged in and generates a string of numbers we call a template. When photos and videos are uploaded to our systems, we compare those images to the template."

You have the option to enable or disable Face Recognition on Facebook at anytime. The feature will be rolling out—as from next week—to users in all regions, except from Canada and Europe where Facebook doesn't offer face recognition technology.
