Most persons thinking of relocating or are already residents in Canada think having a work permit before getting a job is mandatory. However, this isn’t the case…

This might apply to persons who are in the country for a limited time or for a specific purpose, but if you’re staying permanently, it’s advised that you get a working permit.
In this article, I’ll provide a list of jobs you can work without applying for a work permit. These include:
- Working as a journalist
- Volunteering for a charity or non-profit organization
- Participating in a youth or cultural exchange program
- Working as a student on campus at school
- Examination Invigilator
- Clergy
- Military Personnel
- Artists
- A member of a foreign film or television crew
Now, let’s look at them bit by bit and see why they don’t necessarily need you to get a work permit.
1. Working as a journalist
If you work as a journalist or new caster for a media company and you were sent to Canada to report the latest happenings, you won’t need a work permit to function since it’s a temporal mission.
2. Volunteering for a charity or non-profit organization
Most persons serve as volunteers from organization to organization or group solely for the experience and nothing else. If you’re volunteering to work at a program, conference, or any function in Canada, a work permit should be at least on your mind.
3. Participating in a youth exchange program or other cultural exchange programs
Like other countries, Canada hosts thousands of foreigners on their land, some of whom are students or workers. If, for any reason, you’re country hosts a cultural or youth exchange program, then you don’t need a work permit for that.
4. Working as a student on campus at your school
Irrespective of the school you’re enrolled in Canada, you don’t need a work permit to earn some bucks. Most students make a living out of writing exams for other candidates, doing home works and selling other school-related materials or services.
5. Examination Invigilator
Provided you have a certificate proving you have a master’s or Ph.D. degree, you can apply to supervise a professional exam in Canada.
6. Clergy
Religious heads don’t necessarily need to get a work permit to function in Canada.
7. Military Personnel
Military persons can work as defense for Canada without having a work permit; the government also made it possible for you to permanently move to the country with your families.
8. Artists
Performing artists don’t need a work permit before getting on stage because the show might only last a few days before everyone returns to their respective countries.
9. A member of a foreign film or television crew
If you’re in the movie industry and have a cast with a foreign television crew in Canada, you don’t need a work permit to function. Once your passport is ready, fly down to the country and go back once the movie set is over.
Before you can work without a work permit in Canada, you must meet any of the above requirements, although other jobs don’t require a job permit that isn’t listed here.
Also, you’ll need to meet a requirement showing that your service is needed in the country before considering working; for example, a student must possess a valid study permit.
Also, working without a permit is only doable when you have a short or limited stay in Canada since you aren’t a permanent resident. However, you must apply for a work permit if you're seeking long-term.
